Probabilistic Net Position Forecast

The net positions of Switzerland and its neighbouring countries are vital parameters in balancing our grid models. Anticipating them accurately will lead to a better forecast and contribute significantly to a solid decision making ahead of real time grid operation.

Description

The net position is the sum of all load and generation of a given country. Knowing it allows to define a power flow scenario e.g. Switzerland is importing or exporting to its neighbouring countries.

As the real world scenarios are becoming more complex with the increase in renewable energy sources and their interplay with established production, an accurate forecast of the net position will significantly improve the quality of our grid models used for decision making. Equipped with a pile of historical data and any other source of data you find helpful, the aim is to find probability density functions of the net positions of Switzerland and its nearest neighbouring countries for the upcoming week.

Impact

A probabilistic estimate of the net position in advance of day-ahead or real time will greatly improve the power of prediction in longer term planning models. Join this challenge to improve the security and operation of the Swiss electricity grid!
