The dynamic tariff adoption challenge - What’s in it for me?

How can we turn dynamic tariffs into something customers want - not just understand, but actively choose because it feels sustainable, flexible, and future-ready?

Background:

The increasing share of renewable energy is making electricity production more volatile and weather-dependent. To address this, Switzerland will allow dynamic tariffs starting in 2026, and EKZ has confirmed it will implement such a model as an optional choice (Wahltarif). These tariffs offer a powerful tool to incentivize flexible energy use and reduce peak loads but only if customers see real value in them such that they choose this tariff and respond to its signals.

Data:

  • For domain experts and UX designers, we provide a detailed dataset from a typical single-family home, including smart meter data with separate signals for major contributors such as electric vehicles (EV), photovoltaic systems (PV), heat pumps (HP) and home batteries. To support scenario-based thinking, we also highlight specific dates in 2024 that represent typical and worst-case weather conditions, helping you explore how energy usage and flexibility might vary under different real-world circumstances.
  • For data-savvy participants, we offer large-scale, synthetically generated dataset representing single-family homes and corresponding dynamic tariff & weather data - ideal for training models, running simulations, or identifying patterns at scale.

Why participate:

  1. Solve a real-world, high-impact energy challenge - work on a cutting-edge topic with solutions that are designed to be implemented and make a measurable difference.
  2. Drive smarter, cost-efficient energy systems - help align energy consumption with production, reduce peak loads, and avoid unnecessary grid expansion.
  3. Bridge disciplines for powerful innovation - combine data science, UX design, and energy domain expertise to create solutions that are not only smart, but also user-friendly and impactful.
